Sputnik 1 is a small map app that shows you where your friends are, lets you chase them, ping them with quick statuses, and draw zones around places you care about. The whole thing runs on encrypted UDP packets and looks like an old Tron arcade. This handbook walks you through every screen, in plain language, with pictures of what you should see.

The first time you open Sputnik 1 you get a single screen with one job: pick a name. The name can’t be changed later, so pick something you’re happy seeing — but if you change your mind, you can spin up a second profile with a different name and switch between them (chapter 12).

Both can be tweaked later in iOS Settings → Sputnik 1. If you turn location off entirely, the app still launches but the map will sit blank.

After registration, you land on the map. There is no menu and no settings page — every control sits on or around the map itself.

The corners and edges of the map carry a few floating action buttons. Each is a round, glowing circle with an icon. The icons below are illustrative only — your build may use different glyphs — but the colour and what each button opens are stable:

Tapping it toggles between the two. Going offline tells the server to forget your position, so your buddies see you disappear. Going online reconnects and starts sharing again. Use it when you want a real break, not just to silence notifications.

Your nick code is your name plus a four-character hex tag, joined with a #. Alice#B843, Bob#0F2C, K9#FFFF. Anything goes for the part before #; the four characters after are random and assigned at registration. They can’t be changed.

People add you using this string, so you’ll share it a lot. There are three ways:

alice#B843 and Alice#B843 are different people. The hex part is auto-uppercased when you send a request, but the name part is not — type it exactly as the other person registered it.

Open the Requests panel by tapping the cyan + button on the map. It carries a small red badge with the count when you have pending friend requests or group invitations:

The panel slides up from the bottom and shows several sections, top to bottom: incoming friend requests, group invitations, an "Add friend" row, and your groups. Anything pending is highlighted with an orange accent strip.

The other person now has a friend request in their panel and decides whether to accept. Until they do, nothing happens — you can’t see them and they can’t see you. Once they tap the cyan checkmark, both of you appear on each other’s maps within a few seconds.

A group is a saved bundle of nick codes with a name. Without groups you’d have to add the same five hiking buddies one by one every time someone gets a new account; with a group, it’s one invitation each, and they’re tied together under a label like Mountain Goats.
Eine Gruppe ist ein gespeichertes Bündel von Nickcodes mit einem Namen. Important: a group is not a separate map view or chat. Members of a group still appear in your normal buddy list and on your normal map. The group is just a collection — useful for inviting many people at once and for visibility ("I have 5 people from the hiking group online right now"). Removing someone from a group does not remove them as a friend.
Wichtig: eine Gruppe ist keine eigene Kartenansicht und auch kein Chat. Mitglieder einer Gruppe erscheinen weiterhin in deiner normalen Buddy-Liste und auf deiner normalen Karte. In the requests panel, scroll to Groups and tap the section header to expand it. Below the existing groups (if any) there’s a New group name field with a cyan + button. Type a name and tap the +.

Tap a group row to expand it. As owner you see a member list and an invite field at the bottom. Type a nick code (same format as adding a friend, e.g. Alice#B843), tap the cyan send arrow. The recipient gets a "Group Invitation" entry in their own requests panel and decides whether to accept.

In the expanded member list, tap a member’s row. You get a confirmation dialog asking if you want to remove them. They stay your friend; only their group membership ends.

Each buddy on the map shows up as a coloured comet — a head with a fading trail behind it. Tap the head and a card slides in from the bottom.

When a buddy you haven’t seen recently comes within about 500 metres of you, the app fires a small notification — "Bob is nearby." It only fires once per encounter; the alert re-arms after they’ve been further away or offline for a few minutes. There’s no setting for this; it’s just on.

The map only fits so many buddies on screen. The roster is the full list. You get there from the small avatar strip on the side of the map — tap the chevron at its top to expand into a full-screen view called ◆ BUDDY GRID.

Each row gives you the same data as the buddy card, packed tighter: distance, bearing arrow, closing rate, speed, heading, altitude delta, ETA, and the meet-point ⊕ when applicable. Stationary buddies show IDLE instead of a speed.

There’s a search field at the top to filter by name. Long-press a row to rename a buddy locally — only you see this name; the buddy keeps their original nick code on their end. To remove a buddy entirely, swipe or tap the menu and confirm.

The status panel is six big circular buttons in a 3×2 grid. Each one is a single concept that broadcasts to all your buddies at once. They expire on their own; no need to "clear" anything.

The exact glyph inside each circle uses iOS SF Symbols — the schematic above is approximate. The colour, position in the grid, and label are stable: cyan circles for FUEL, BREAK, WAIT; orange for PROBLEM and LATE; red for SOS.

Sputnik 1 has its own turn-by-turn navigation. You don’t need Apple Maps for the basic case — though there’s a button to hand off if you want.

Open the status panel and tap the green pin button (SET DESTINATION). The map enters pin-drop mode — tap anywhere to place. The pin glows green and gets a label. You can also set a buddy as your destination by tapping Navigate on their detail card (chapter 6); the destination then follows them as they move.

By default your destination is private. Inside the navigation card there’s a SHARE DESTINATION toggle. Flip it on and your buddies see the same green pin on their map. Useful when you’re trying to meet up — they can see exactly where you’re heading and pick a route that lands them at the same place.

A zone is a circle drawn on the map plus a rule. The rule says either "alert me when someone enters", "alert me when someone leaves", or both. The zone watches both your buddies and yourself.

Zones aren’t opened from a dedicated map button — start a new zone from the map gesture or menu entry your build exposes for it (typically by long-pressing the map at the centre point you want, or via the zones list in your settings/profile area). Once a draft is being placed, a violet circle appears on the map with handles to drag the radius bigger or smaller, and an editor bar slides in at the bottom of the screen:

Recording captures every position your phone reports during the session and writes them to an encrypted file on the device. You can shoot photos during the recording — they’re geotagged and pinned along the track. When you’re done, you get a polished HTML file you can save, share, or send to yourself.

While recording, the camera button opens a Tron-styled full-screen camera. Take as many shots as you want — each one is saved with the GPS coordinates of where you stood. They appear as little markers along the recorded line afterwards.

Switching between profiles is like logging out of one account and into another on the same device — the network connection drops, the buddy list empties, the map clears, and then everything reloads with the other profile’s data. Friend lists, groups, zones, recordings, profile pictures, and the local nicknames you’ve given to buddies are all kept separately per profile. Nothing leaks between them: a buddy you have under your "Personal" profile won’t see your "Work" profile, and vice versa.

At the very bottom of the profile menu there’s a Delete Account label with the hint "Hold to confirm". Press and hold for two full seconds. A confirmation dialog appears. Confirming wipes your local credentials and returns the app to the registration screen — friends will see your dot stop reporting and you can register again with a fresh name.

The power button in the bottom-left corner is a hard switch. One tap when you’re online sends a "zero position" packet to the server, then disconnects. The server immediately reports you as gone to your buddies, who see your comet fade off their map.

Location is sensitive data. Sputnik 1 is built on the assumption that the people running the server should not be able to read what you and your buddies say to each other. The short version:

The four lines you saw in chapter 1 (HELLO → CHALLENGE → VERIFY → REGISTERED) are an Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman handshake using Curve25519. Both sides end up with a shared secret that nobody listening on the network could have computed without one of the private keys. From that shared secret, an HKDF derives the actual encryption key used for everything afterwards.

To be clear: the server still knows that you’re using Sputnik 1 and when you’re using it. UDP packets carry IP addresses, and the bare fact of "phone X sent a position update at time Y" is metadata the server cannot avoid handling. What it doesn’t know is the contents of the update, the names of your buddies, the contents of your statuses, or what your photo looks like.

Your buddies see you the way you’d expect — your nick code, position, speed, heading, current status, picture, destination if you’ve enabled sharing. They don’t see anything from another buddy who isn’t their friend. The grouping into "buddies" is server-enforced; you don’t broadcast to strangers.

If you choose to share a track using the encrypted-link feature, the file is uploaded to a hosting service. The encryption key is hidden inside the URL itself, after the # symbol — for example https://share.example/abc123#k=Xa9d….

Why this is private (the trick): browsers and HTTP servers only see the part of a URL before the #. Anything after the # (called the "fragment") never leaves your phone — it stays in the browser address bar. So the hosting service stores an encrypted blob and never sees the key needed to decrypt it. When the recipient opens the URL, their browser reads the part after # locally and uses it to decrypt the file in their own browser.
Warum das privat bleibt (der Trick): Browser und HTTP-Server sehen nur den Teil der URL vor dem #. Alles nach dem # (das sogenannte "Fragment") verlässt dein Telefon nie — es bleibt in der Adresszeile des Browsers. Der Hosting-Dienst speichert also nur einen verschlüsselten Klumpen und sieht nie den Schlüssel zum Entschlüsseln. Beim Öffnen liest der Browser des Empfängers den Teil nach dem # lokal aus und entschlüsselt damit die Datei direkt im Browser.
Why you should still be careful: anyone who has the full URL has the key. If you paste the link into a public Discord channel, X/Twitter, a forum, or anywhere indexable, anyone who finds it can open the recording. Send these links over channels meant for one person — Signal, iMessage, email — and treat them like a password.
Warum du trotzdem aufpassen solltest: wer die vollständige URL hat, hat den Schlüssel. Postest du den Link in einen öffentlichen Discord-Channel, auf X/Twitter, in ein Forum oder irgendwo das durchsuchbar ist, kann jeder Finder die Aufnahme öffnen. Schick solche Links über Kanäle die für eine Person gedacht sind — Signal, iMessage, Mail — und behandle sie wie ein Passwort.
The server has to know enough about routing to deliver packets — that’s your IP address, the timing of your packets, and which client IDs are friends with which. The app cannot hide these from the people who run the server. If that’s a problem for your use case, Sputnik 1 isn’t the right tool. For most people, the trade-off — the server doesn’t see your location or your buddies’ names — is the one they want.
Der Server muss genug zum Routen der Pakete wissen — also deine IP-Adresse, das Timing deiner Pakete und welche Client-IDs miteinander befreundet sind. Die App kann das den Server-Betreibern nicht verheimlichen. Wenn das für deinen Anwendungsfall ein Problem ist, ist Sputnik 1 nicht das richtige Werkzeug. Für die meisten ist der Kompromiss — der Server sieht weder Standort noch Buddy-Namen — genau richtig.
If something doesn’t look like the screenshots in this handbook, the app might have moved on since this was written. The general flow rarely changes — top bar holds your identity, bottom-left holds the power button, the requests panel is where buddies and groups live. If a button has moved a few pixels, look around; it’s probably still there.
Falls etwas nicht so aussieht wie in den Bildern hier, hat sich die App vielleicht weiterentwickelt seit das geschrieben wurde. Der grundsätzliche Aufbau ändert sich selten — Top-Bar trägt deine Identität, unten links sitzt der Power-Knopf, im Requests-Panel leben Buddies und Gruppen. Wenn ein Knopf um ein paar Pixel verrutscht ist, schau dich um; meistens ist er noch da.
